In 1801, President Jefferson appointed Madison as Secretary of State. Madison was viewed as a strong man, as someone who stood up to Britain and France. President Jefferson, thus, looked to Madison to succeed him and endorsed his secretary of state in 1808. It was a gesture which helped secure Madison's election.
